Relocating with a pet/ local Veterinarians and pet insurance, and facilities
To enter dogs and cats it is required a veterinary certificate, with a maximum date of 15 days before the trip, generated by an authorized veterinary in the home country.
The document must confirm that the animal comes from an area where there have not been severe illnesses in the last three months and is good health. Furthermore, the animal must have been vaccinated against rabies between a month and a year before the trip, including in the certification the name and serial number of the product.
Health Certificate
All countries worldwide require an original health certificate, including:
● owner’s information
● origination and destination details and
● details of your pet and
● vaccinations and treatments and
● veterinary attestations regarding symptoms of contagious diseases at the time of export.
Further, your veterinarian must certify that your pet is healthy enough to travel, and is not from a region that is subject to rabies restrictions. The health certificate must properly identify your pet. Depending on the origination country, additional details and treatments must be listed.
A licensed veterinarian in the origin country must complete the Pet Health Certificate for the Dominican Republic within several weeks of entry.
The health certificate must clearly identify your pet and include its microchip number. A governmental veterinarian must state that your pet is fit to travel and is not originating from an area that is under restrictions for rabies.
After issuance, the certificate must be certified (endorsed) by a government veterinarian representing the agency in the origination country that is responsible for the import and export of live animals.
Importing Puppies and Kittens to the Dominican Republic
Unvaccinated puppies and kittens are not permitted to enter the Dominican Republic. Once your puppy or kitten turns 3 months of age, it must be vaccinated for rabies and wait 30 days before entering the Dominican Republic.
Entering the Dominican Republic by Air
Pets entering the Dominican Republic by air should do so via international airports in Santo Domingo, Puerto Plate or Punta Cana.. Pets can enter the Dominican Republic in the cabin, as checked baggage or as air cargo, according to airline pet policies. In all cases, pets must travel in a crate or carrier in accordance with the International Air Transport Association.
Importers should notify veterinary officials of their pet’s arrival 48 hours ahead of time to allow for inspection of your pet and its pet passport documentation.
All domestic dogs and cats must be free of evidence of disease communicable to humans when examined at the entry airport.
If your dog or cat is not in apparent good health, further examination by a licensed veterinarian may be required at your expense.
Exporting Resident Pets
On departure, be sure to obtain a health certificate from the Office of Animal Health. The certificate is valid for 72 hours. You will need it to depart the country.
Before departure, you must take your pet to the quarantine office at the airport 48 hours before departure from the Dominican Republic, where they will issue a new health certificate and permit to take the pet from the country. There is a nominal fee charged for this service.

Public Safety in the Dominican Republic:
The most common recommendations for travellers who do not know the area is, on the first place, not to wander near the isolated areas of the city center or the Malecón once it is dark; especially in Santo Domingo where it is better to take a cab if you are going to a party. Likewise, it is not advisable to openly showing off jewels on the street and very crowded markets. However, the objects of desire for thieves are ID cards, passports and residence cards as they can be resold easily.
The tourist police, known as politur, is scattered throughout the island and exhibit a very correct behavior with the travellers. It is advisable to go to this service as it is more reliable than the National Police. You can easily recognize them by their uniform with a white shirt and blue bermudas; furthermore, they drive motorcycles or all-terrains.
On the other hand, there is also private police, also known as the ‘guachimanes’, which watch some businesses or residential areas; they carry fire guns but they clothe as civilians.
In the hotels, the security is pretty good although it is always advisable to put everything away with a lot of precaution.
Besides, while driving, one of the most extended practices is the bribery when it comes to little traffic fines; but you have to previously tested the ground and do it sensibly.
Another important recommendation is to be careful with the prostitutes or ‘leathers’ since, in many occasions, they steal the tourist while fondling them as a distraction.
In the case of pulling, this usually happens in tourist areas, although the pickpockets are widely extended.
The tiniest beggars bother the traveler in most of the tourist areas; they usually sell coffee, snacks or clean shoes.
Regarding drug smuggling, it is heavily prosecuted and the simple weed or cocaine possession means a huge fine, in the best of cases, or even prison for a year without the possibility of fine.
